Apparently It IS easy to Build a Squidoo Lens
Posted by AlanAug 7
So I keep hearing how easy, and how important, it is to build Squidoo lenses. But before today I had only seen one Squidoo lens, and did not have an account. So I thought I’d try my hand at building one from scratch.
Of course, there was no point learning without bringing you guys along with me. So I did.
Check out the screen capture video I recorded while learning from Step One…
It did take a little more than ten minutes for me to get the first lens done… so I had to cut the video in two for YouTube happiness. But then again… I had a lens up in a little over ten minutes.
Just for fun I created the lens Is Alex Jeffreys just a hack? Of course the answer to that question is a resounding, NO… but I thought the title may attract viewers of all types. A little sneaky… but not much.
So check out the videos… there is actually a third video. I didn’t want to waste time figuring out whether I could insert HTML in the text… or maybe it was BBcode or something else… so I recorded a second video showing what I learned while editing my text boxes and adding my blog posts.
Leave me some comments to let me know what you think… I did learn not to scroll my screen so much when my personal information is up… had to blur a big chunk of screen there for a bit. Another learning experience… now you don’t have to make THAT mistake.
Without any further ado…

Alan, well done on your first Squidoo lens! You just went out and did it, and I find that great! I love your blog layout, too, can you tell me what theme you are using?
Hey Petra! Thanks for coming by… I really appreciate the comments. The theme is called “Mixed Media Red” and I picked it up on Wordpress Themes Base. They have a lot of really nice free templates there.
Talk to you soon!
Peace,
Alan
Hey Alan
Well done on the SL. They are on my to do list-somewhere!
Good luck with MWA.
Regards
Mike
Hey Alan,
Great video, I haven’t created my first squidoo lens yet, so it was good to see it being done beforehand. I’ll have to get one up real soon.
Take care,
Paul.
Hey Mike…
Thanks, I appreciate it! You really should get a couple lenses up… easy stuff, and good linkage!
Peace,
Alan
Yo Paul!
Good to hear for you! I hope that the videos offer a little help getting you started. That was the point of making them after all! : )
Peace,
Alan
Hi Alan,
Nice work getting your Squidoo Lense up.
Squidoo is a good way of getting backlinks to your blog site or what ever you are promoting.
After you’ve published your lense, you need to get the lense Indexed by Google, otherwise people won’t be able to find your information.
A tip to get the Lense Indexed:
- Click on the RSS feed icon on your lens
- Copy the URL
- Go to Feedage.Com and paste that url into the “add url” form.
Go to Feedest.Com and add the URL there as well
This should help your site get indexed.
Give me a shout if you want any help.

Great work on the Squidoo Lens. I’ve created them before for some affiliate promos and other sites and they really aren’t as daunting as they first appear. Are you getting good traffic results from the lens? My experiences have been mixed to date so Squidoo hasn’t yet reached the top of my list of priorities.
Will be giving John’s tactics a go though for indexing.
Have a good weekend
Tom
Hey John!
Wow! Thanks for the advice on getting indexed! That was some good stuff that I would never have done without the suggestion!
I will definitely let you know how it works out!
Thanks a ton!
Peace,
Alan
Hey Tom!
Thanks for dropping by and checking me out! I have seen only a small trickle of traffic from Squidoo so far… but then again… I finally got around to taking John’s suggestions! So maybe I’ll get some pop from that.
I’ll let you know for sure!
Peace,
Alan
Excellent idea to do a follow-along screencast. I’ve mentioned it over on my blog.
I’ve created a lens called *My First Lens* whose purpose is to share the “first lens building” experiences of both long-time and newbie Squidoo-ers like you and me. As I meet lensmasters, I’m asking them to pop over and give a little input. There’s also a Plexo module to add resources. It would be great if you would add your screencast to the resources module. Many thanks.
